Two police officers and one suspect were shot Friday during a shooting in Maryland after the officers went to investigate a report of a man with a gun in public, police said. The officers responded around 1 p.m. Friday to a report of a “suspicious male” with a gun in Frederick, a city of over 70,000 people about 50 miles west of Baltimore, Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said at a news conference. He did not provide information about what led to the shooting. He identified the officers as Bryan Snyder, 43, who is in his second year on the force, and Kristen Kowalsky, 32, a nine-year veteran of the department. Both were shot in the torso, said Dr. Thomas Scalea of Shock Trauma in Baltimore, adding that their conditions are stable and they are awake.“It is such a tough time. These officers go out on the street every day,” Lando said. “They risk their lives, they want to do the best job they can for the community. So it’s very disheartening as a police chief.” The suspect was identified as Dominique Lamarr Lewis, 25. Lewis underwent surgery, Scalea said, after being shot in the torso. Lando said police do not know who fired their weapons first.Asked if all three were expected to survive, Scalea said, “I hope so.””We just want to assure the community there is no other threat going on right now,” Lando said. The Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division and the Maryland State Police will investigate the shooting, Lando said.Several schools in the area were temporarily on lockout status due to “police activity in the area,” according to a tweet from the Frederick County Public School District.Less than an hour later, the district tweeted that the lockout status had been lifted.”All students and staff are safe,” the district said.Contact News Now Reporter Christine Fernando at cfernando@usatoday.com or follow her on Twitter at @christinetfern.Contributing: Associated Press
