Berlin (dpa) – The Federal Government sees no reason yet to relax the strict coronavirus measures in Germany. “The moment we feel we can ease the restrictions responsibly, this Federal Government, and indeed all state governments, will do exactly that,” government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said in Berlin on Monday. At the moment, however, it is “still a bit premature” to take this step.
As the government spokesperson explained, we are still at the stage when numbers are going up, with new record figures being seen every day. The peak of the wave has not yet been reached. “And therefore I would warn at the moment against believing prematurely that it is already over,” Hebestreit said.
In Germany, infection figures are currently rising sharply due to the spread of the contagious Omicron variant of coronavirus. Among other things, tough contact restrictions are therefore in place, and in some cases strict access rules apply to many shops and indeed events. Chancellor Olaf Scholz intends to discuss the further course of action with the country’s state premiers in mid-February.
