Karimnagar: Though the overall crime rate in Karimnagar police commissionerate limits declined in 2021, cybercrime has become a big problem for the cops. Besides online banking fraud, cheating in the name of OTP, OLX and harassing women and students on Facebook and Whatsapp have increased.
Fraudsters from Jamtara of Jharkhand and Bharatpur of Rajasthan have been targetting locals and cheating them by promising loans, performing marriages and other kinds of support.
Going a step ahead, some of them also collected money from some people by promising to protect them from ACB raids. In this regard, two cases were also registered, Commissioner of Police V Sathyanarayana said, giving details of the annual crime report to the media here on Wednesday.

According to statistics projected in the annual crime report, 32 cybercrime cases were reported in 2021. While 38 cases were registered in 2020, 21 cases were reported in 2019. On the other hand, a total of 3,665 crimes took place this year. When compared to last year, 76 less cases were reported.
However, there was a huge decline in property recovery. Only 48.45 percent of stolen property was recovered this year. Rs 58.98 lakh worth property was recovered as against Rs 1.21 crore worth property lost in various crimes. Whereas, Rs 65.07 percent of property was recovered in 2020. While Rs 1.10 crore property was lost, Rs 69.62 lakh was recovered. A whopping Rs 9.52 crore fine was realised from two-wheeler users through 5.14 lakh helmet violation cases in 2021.
The number of rape cases has been going up every year. While 41 rapes were reported this year, 34 cases took place in 2020. In 2019, 28 rapes were reported.
There was also a jump in road accidents as well as deaths. A total of 193 persons died in 529 road accidents that took place this year. In 2020, 183 persons died in 481 incidents.
Terming them as self-accidents, the CP stated that drunk motorists died after hitting road dividers, parked vehicles, and others. To control such accidents, drunk and drive are being continued extensively.
Missing cases of minor girls have become a big challenge for police. Girls having love affairs were fleeing with their lovers. After some time, they were joined by their parents. Though they were technically not missing cases, they have to register them as missing cases with parents loading complaints.
57 such cases were reported this year. Of the 52 cases were traced. 59 and 77 cases were registered in 2020 and 2019 respectively and all the cases were traced.
Stating that the condition of traffic in Karimnagar town was in bad shape, Satyanarayana said that the problem has developed due to increase in traffic as well as vehicles.
Footpaths have been encroached by business people, he said and informed to clear all footpath encroachments across the town by taking a special drive.
When asked about the setting up of the traffic signalling system, he said that Rs 23 crore was sanctioned to develop traffic signals across the town. CCTV cameras would also be established in all places for the safety of the town.
