Durgapur (West Bengal): Three labourers dead after being stuck inside a vacuum oxygen unit at Durgapur Steel Plant in West Bengal, local police said on Friday. Four others were seriously injured and are being treated at a local hospital, authorities said here.

According to local media reports, the workers were carrying out routine activities on Friday afternoon when seven of the labourers fainted due to an increase in Carbon Monoxide levels in the plant. The labourers were taken to the hospital, where three of them were declared brought dead.

According to a report by Aaj Tak, the Carbon Monoxide leakage took place in a converter unit in the plant. The Fire Brigade and CISF teams managed to bring the situation under control after almost an hour-long effort. The deceased workers have been identified as  – Chintu Yadav, Sajan Chouhan and Santosh Chouhan. 

An official statement from Durgapur Steel Plant is awaited. The exact reason behind the leakage is not yet known. The factory officials are probing the matter further.
