The high-ranking official made the remarks while responding to a query whether New Delhi would change its existing stance on the Ukraine-Russia conflict following the death of an Indian student in Kharkiv.”In the UN, we take positions that are based on certain very careful considerations and certainly we do regard the merits of each and every case. We will consider them in their entirety and take decisions in our best interests,” Shringla told the media. It may be noted that India abstained from voting on a resolution at the UN Security Council that strongly condemned the Russian military invasion attack on Ukraine. New Delhi abstained from voting on the United Nations Security Council’s call for a rare emergency special session of the 193-member United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine on February 28.New Delhi had also abstained from vote against a US-sponsored resolution that would have deplored Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine.India, however, has maintained that both sides should avoid military confrontation and move towards peace through dialogue. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UNPR) TS Tirumurti has categorically stated at the UN that New Delhi calls for respecting the “sovereignty and territorial integrity” of countries and has sought immediate cessation of “violence and hostilities”.
