Bengaluru: At the height of the protests over the hijab ban in colleges in Karnataka, one image stood out on Tuesday. A hijab-wearing student in Mandya stood up against a group of boys who were wearing saffron shawls. The girl student confronted the boys when they tried to heckle her for wearing a hijab.

The girl student later said “outsiders” were to be blamed for using trouble and that her classmates and authorities at the PES College in Mandya had supported her.

Now, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, one of the leading Islamic organisations of the country, has announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for the girl student for chanting ‘Allah-u-Akbar’ while wearing the hijab in the Karnataka college.

In a tweet, the Jamiat said that Bibi Muskan Khan had stood up amid heated protests for her constitutional and religious rights.

The hijab vs saffron protests intensified in Karnataka on Tuesday and small incidents of violence were also reported from some parts of the state.

In the Mandya incident, the girl was surrounded by saffron shawl wearing boys who were chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’. A viral video of the incident shows the girl responding by shouting ‘Allah-u-Akbar’ and then walking away. She could also be heard defending her right to wear hijab.

Meanwhile, amid growing tensions in the state over the issue, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai yesterday ordered the closure of schools and colleges for the next three days.

“I appeal to all the students, teachers and management of schools and colleges as well as people of Karnataka to maintain peace and harmony. I have ordered closure of all high schools and colleges for next three days. All concerned are requested to cooperate,” he tweeted.

He also said that his government will follow the High Court, which is set to rule on a batch of petitions on the matter today.
