New Delhi: Fuelled by the Omicron vacriant of SARS-CoV-2,  the COVID-19 cases continue to see a massive spike across India. Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Gujarat have emerged as states of concern due to the rise in coronavirus infections there. The Union health ministry today said that around 300 districts are registering weekly Covid case positivity of more than 5 per cent. The case positivity has climbed to 11.05 per cent on Wednesday from 1.1 per cent on December 30.

Karnataka

Karnataka logged a big spike in daily COVID cases as 21,390 more people tested positive for coronavirus. The death count climbed to 38,389 as 10 more patients succumbed due to the disease. Of the total cases, 15,617 were reported from Bengaluru Urban. Karnataka has 93,099 active cases. 

Maharashtra

Maharashtra reported 46,723 new COVID cases and 32 deaths today. The case fatality rate stands at 2.01 per cent. A total of 1,367 Omicron cases have been reported in Maharashtra so far. The state’s recovery rate at present is 94.52 per cent.

Delhi

Delhi recorded the second-highest single-day rise since the beginning of the COVID pandemic in 2020. The city registered 27,561 fresh coronavirus infections, while the positivity rate rose to 26.22 per cent. The national capital recorded the highest number of COVID deaths since June 10, 2021. Forty patients succumbed in the last 24 hours, according to data shared by the health department.

Gujarat

Gujarat logged more than 9,000 new coronavirus infections and four deaths in a 24-hour period. The state now has 43,726 active cases. Of the total cases, Ahmedabad city recorded the highest 3,843 new infections, followed by Surat at 2,505 cases. 

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh clocked 13,681 fresh COVID-19 cases and three more fatalities today. Kanpur, Hardoi and Sultanpur reported one death each. Gautam Buddh Nagar topped the list with 1,992 fresh coronavirus cases, followed by Lucknow 2,181 infections, while Meerut reported 1,250 cases.

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir massive jump in daily COVID cases in the last 24 hours. In J&K 1,695 people tested positive for the disease, raising the caseload to 3,48,201. There are 6,242 Covid active cases in the union territory. Fortunately, only one death was reported from the UT.

Kerala

After a gap of nearly three months, Kerala today crossed the 10,000 mark in fresh COVID-19 cases. The southern state logged 12,742 new infections and 199 deaths which raised the total fatalities to 50,254. A government release stated that the active cases in the state crossed the 50,000 mark to reach 54,430.

Odisha

Odisha today registered 8,778 fresh Covid cases, taking the state’s caseload to 10,91,547. As many as 792 children were among the new patients, while the number of active cases in the state climbed to 35,242.

Ladakh

Ladakh recorded 41 fresh COVID-19 cases. The active cases in the Union Territory has increased to 406.

Telangana

Telangana logged 2,319 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths today. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of fresh cases with 1,275, followed by Medchal Malkajgiri (234) district.
