Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Lok Sabha MP and actor Amol Kolhe is in a tricky situation over his portrayal of Nathuram Godse in a movie titled ‘Why I killed Gandhi’.

Maharashtra Minister and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad took strong objections to Kolhe playing Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin in the film.

After watching the trailer of the movie, Ahwad was of the opinion that the film endorses Godse’s ideology and one cannot support the murder of Mahatma Gandhi under the garb of being an actor.

The movie will release on January 30 on an OTT platform.

Meanwhile, reacting to the controversy surrounding his film, Kolhe said he had shot for the film in 2017 and at that point in time he was not associated with NCP nor a parliamentarian. The NCP leader said that he has no love for Godse nor does he hates Mahatma Gandhi.

Notably, Mahesh Manjrekar is also directing a film on Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi. The Bollywood actor and director had announced his next venture on October 2, 2021.

“The Deadliest Birthday wish ever! Get ready to witness a story no one dared to tell before! Sandeep Singh, Raaj Shaandilyaa and Mahesh Manjrekar announce a film “Godse” on Mahatma Gandhi’s 152nd birth anniversary. The story of Nathuram Godse has always been close to my heart,” Manjrekar had tweeted.

NCP leader Jitendra Awhad had hit out at Manjrekar, saying the director was making such films to seek attention.

Facing criticism over his next directorial venture, Manjrekar had tweeted: “It takes a lot of courage to back a film of this nature. I always believe in hard hitting subjects and uncompromised storytelling and this one fits the bill. People do not know much about Godse other than he’s the man who fired at Gandhi.”
