Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a roadshow in Varanasi on Friday in support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates ahead of the last leg of the high-octane 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Varanasi will vote in the seventh and final phase of UP Assembly polls on March 7. The prime minister will begin the roadshow in his parliamentary constituency from the Maldahiya roundabout after garlanding a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, city BJP president Vidyasagar Rai told news agency PTI. It will culminate at the chowk, from where the prime minister will go to the Kashi Vishwanath temple to offer prayers, Rai said. The city party unit has put up cutouts of the Ayodhya temple, Kashi Vishwanath Dham and billboards of important government welfare schemes at roundabouts enroute the roadshow in the city, he said. A large number of people, including women, will attend the show, he added. After PM Modi, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav is also slated to hold a roadshow in Varanasi in the evening. Earlier, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow in Varanasi on Thursday. A look at the outcome of the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election In 2017, the BJP had won six out of the eight assembly seats in Varanasi, while its partner Apna Dal (Sonelal) had bagged one and another one had gone to OM Prakash Rajbhar’s Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) who was with them that time. However, this time Rajbhar is now with Akhilesh Yadav. The SP also has influential OBC leaders Swami Prasad Maurya, Dara Singh Chauhan and others who have crossed over to the party from the BJP. Seat-sharing in Varanasi’s poll battle The BJP has fielded its candidates on seven seats, leaving Rohania constituency for union minister Anupriya Patel headed Apna Dal (S). Akhilesh Yadav has nominated four SP candidates in Varanasi and has left four others to allies — Apna Dal (Kamerwadi) headed by Anupriya’s mother Krishna Patel and Rajbhar’s SBSP.
