‘Situation not good in Ukraine, many students staying in bunkers’: Indians evacuees recount horror

Indian nationals who were evacuated from UkrainePhoto : ANINew Delhi: Indian nationals, mostly students, who were evacuated from Ukraine, gave a first-hand account of the ongoing turmoil in the war-hit country, saying that the situation there is not good and that many students are staying in bunkers to escape bombardment amid the raging military conflict. The second Air India flight carrying 250 Indian citizens landed at the airport in Delhi in the early hours of Sunday. The Indians were brought back on the flight from Romanian capital Bucharest Suriya Subhash from Maharashtra’s Solapur, one of the returnees, said she was relieved to be back in her country after a “hectic journey”. “The situation is very bad there (Ukraine). People are stranded,” she said. The students also thanked the Indian government for bringing them back to their home county and saving their lives. The returnees are from different states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Kerala etc.

We are worried about our studies. But it is good to be back. I thank the government for bringing us back,” said Susmita Rathore, a first year medical student. Another student said, “Many students are staying in bunkers due to attacks against Ukraine. The situation is difficult. I would like to thank the government for evacuating us on time.”

Another evacuee, Shraddha Shette, appealed to the government to evacuate the remaining Indian students stranded in Ukraine. “We are safe now, but other students stranded there are unsafe and they are facing issues. We are worried about them. The government should bring them back as well,” she said, PTI reported. The evacuation of Indian citizens stuck in Ukraine amid the Russian military offensive started on Saturday. The first evacuation flight, AI1944, brought back 219 people from Bucharest to Mumbai yesterday.
