Pulwama: Amid the ongoing controversy over hijab in Karnataka, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah said that everyone has the right to wear whatever they want and is free to practice their religious beliefs.

“Everyone has the right to wear and eat as they wish and is free to practice their religious beliefs,” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.

He further said that “some radical elements” are trying to divide the people of the country on communal lines.

“There are some radical elements who are attacking a religion in an attempt to win polls by dividing people on communal lines,” he added.

On Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said every citizen of the country should respect the religious sentiments of others and hold the Constitution supreme.

Last week, the Karnataka government in an order said that students at schools and pre-university colleges across the state should only follow the uniforms prescribed by it or the management of private institutions.

The Karnataka High Court has restrained all students from wearing any sort of religious dress within the classroom in the state, regardless of their religion or faith, until further orders on pleas challenging the ban in educational institutions with a dress code.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had said that by letting students’ hijab come in the way of their education, the BJP-led state government is robbing the future of the “daughters of India”.
