Hyderabad: A day after the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party’s Telangana unit chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar, BJP president JP Nadda on Tuesday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi in the state as part of the party’s “peace rally”.

Nadda visit drew high drama today evening at the Hyderabad airport as police denied permission to hold a rally in view of the Covid-19-related prohibitory orders.

“I went to the Mahatma Gandhi statue to pay my respects following Covid-19 protocols. The Telangana government is the most undemocratic government (in India). What has happened in the last two days is a murder of democracy. It is a form of autocracy here,” Nadda said in Hyderabad.

The city police commissioner had denied Nadda the permission to hold the rally or march to the Mahatma Gandhi statue, citing Covid-19 restrictions.

“I said you wanted me to adopt the norms and I adopted the norms. I will go as per the norms. They can tell me where they feel that I am not following it. I will fulfil if there is any shortcoming in following the norms. But, I will go to pay my respects at Gandhiji’s statue in a democratic way and within the system,” Nadda reportedly said.

The march to “save democracy in Telangana” was organised at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Secunderabad to protest against the arrest of Bandi Sanjay Kumar.

Starting Thursday, Nadda is scheduled to participate in a three-day coordination meeting of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and various other organisations inspired by the RSS.
