Shyamala Gopalan Educational Society has taken up a slew of initiatives to commemorate the memorial anniversary of Dr Shyamala Gopalan on the 11thof February. Dr Shyamala’s meteoric ascent to become an influential figure in American academia has created a lasting impact on women around the globe. A true definition of a complete woman, Dr Shyamala excelled as a scientist, a mentor, a mother, and an activist. 

‘The story of Great Dr Shyamala Gopalan’s life is one that many women can learn from, and the inspiration she provides has been a driving force for creating this society in her name,’ said chairman Suresh Reddy.

Vedic rituals were performed across the country in many pilgrimage places which include Kashi, Prayag, Bhadrachalam, Vemulavada. Hundreds of priests participated in these programs. Atmashanti Homam was performed in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu; along with Setu Snana (holy bath on the shores of the Indian Ocean) marking the importance of Dr Gopalan’s birthplace Tamil Nadu.

Cultural programmes were held at many schools in different locations and thousands of children actively participated in various competitions held on the occasion.

The students from Yellandu, Bhadrachalam, Siddipet, Siricilla, Warangal, Paloncha and Hyderabad participated in the event in huge numbers. The founder paid floral tributes to Shyamala Gopalan’s statue. On Friday evening, a prayer session was also held by representatives of society in Hyderabad. And prayers were offered for the well-being of Dr. Shyamala Gopalan’s family. 

As part of the commemoration of Dr Gopalan, charitable activities were also conducted in her memory, under which ration kits were given to many needy families in Hyderabad. Free medical camps & blood donation camps were organised at health care institutions associated with society. The society which launched an afforestation mission two months before her birth anniversary continued it by facilitating the drive of planting 5,000 saplings in various parts of the state. 

Shyamala Gopalan Educational Society aims to promote higher education among the students of the weaker sections by helping them with financial support. 

Pammi Nagaraju, a meritorious student from Raghunathapalem of Khammam district, received financial support of Rs.25,000 from N.Suresh Reddy.  Nagaraju belongs to an extremely poor family and cleared NEET on the very first attempt. Suresh Reddy hoped that the students who received financial aid from the society would finish their study, become successful, and serve the community in return.
