Ukraine-Russia Conflict: Operation Ganga in its ‘last leg’ as India continues evacuations

Photo : ANINew Delhi: As the Ukraine-Russia conflict enters its 12th day, India’s evacuation efforts under Operation Ganga have reached their ‘last leg’. More than 16,000 Indians have been evacuated from the war-hit country so far, with the Sumy now remaining the primary point of concern. India has been bringing back its nationals from Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova after they crossed over to these countries from Ukraine through land border transit points. The first flight had returned with the stranded Indians on February 26 from Bucharest.Here are the latest developments pertaining to India’s evacuation efforts in Ukraine:

  • A special flight carrying 160 students evacuated from Ukraine reached Delhi on Monday from Budapest in Hungary. The Air Asia flight landed at around 4-4.30 am.
  • The Ukranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established an emergency hotline for African, Asian and other students wishing to leave because of the Russian invasion. “We are working intensively to ensure their safety and speed up their passage,” it added in a tweet.

  • Officials indicate that India has entered the last leg of Operation Ganga, with the Indian embassy in Hungary posting an “important announcement” on Twitter asking Indian students who are still in that country to report to designated contact points for return to the country.
  • An Indian embassy team stationed in Poltava City is set to coordinate safe passage of Indian students stranded in Sumy to Western borders. “Confirmed time and date will be issued soon. Indian students advised to be ready to leave on short notice,” tweeted the Embassy of India in Kyiv on Sunday night.
