UP Election 2022: Setback for Congress as party’s Amroha candidate joins Samajwadi Party ahead of polls

Rampur, UP: In a massive embarrassment for Congress in Uttar Pradesh, the party’s candidate from the Amroha constituency on Friday joined the Samajwadi Party ahead of the second phase of the assembly polls in the state.

Salim Khan, the Congress candidate from Amroha (Sadar seat) joined the SP in presence of party chief Akhilesh Yadav in Rampur.

He was earlier in news for publicly saying that people must vote for the Samajwadi Party to keep the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) out in these elections.

The second phase of polling for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly is scheduled for February 14. A total of 586 candidates are in the fray for 55 Assembly Constituencies in the second phase, including nine reserved for the Scheduled Castes.

The reserved seats include that of Saharanpur, Bijnor, Amroha (JP Nagar), Moradabad, Bareilly, Rampur, Sambhal (Bhim Nagar), Budaun and Shahjahanpur district.

The assembly election in Uttar Pradesh is being held in seven phases, while the last phase of polling will be conducted on March 7. The results will be declared on March 10, as per the Election Commission of India.

The main contest is seen between the ruling BJP and the Samajwadi Party.

Eleven districts in Uttar Pradesh where voting was held on Thursday witnessed an estimated voter turnout of 60.17 per cent till 6 pm, as per the Election Commission.
