New Delhi: Days after Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik sanctioned Rs 79 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) as assistance to the Missionaries of Charity (MoC), the Vishva Hindu Parishad said no CM has the right to give the money of Hindus to an organization that converts them.

Strongly objecting to the financial assistance to the MoC the VHP called the amount “taxpayers’ money” and accused the organization of converting Hindus.

“Missionaries of Charity is involved in conversion. No CM has right to give the money of Hindus to an organization that converts them,” VHP Gen Secretary Milind Parande.

It is alleged that MoC has many doubtful activities which are against Hinduism, the VHP said and took a swipe at the BJD government saying it is quite bounteous to gratify 3 per cent of Christians of Odisha population against 96 per cent of the Hindu population.

Odisha CM had sanctioned Rs 78.76 lakh from the CMRF to support 13 institutions run by the Missionaries of Charity in the state and as per the CM’s office, the assistance was for MoC institutions across eight districts of Odisha.

As per the report, over 900 leprosariums and orphanages will benefit from this decision.

This statement from the VHP comes a day after Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity (MTMC) got back its Foreign Contribution Regulations Act (FCRA) licence again.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had earlier not renewed the FCRA licence of the Kolkata-based organisation which operates orphanages and shelters for the poor, sick, and destitute in India.

The MHA’s decision led to a nationwide controversy with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemning the move.

Issuing a statement the MHA said it had found some adverse input following which it didn’t renew the licence.

The Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registration is mandatory to receive foreign donations.
