Hyderabad: Chirping of sparrows, broken bullock cartwheels, wooden plough, sickles, wooden baskets, brick-making tools – these and many more installations have been put up by artists from the two Telugu States at Nehru Art Gallery, Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU).
The installations are about things we miss in our fast-paced urban lifestyle and rightly depicted through the objects which one sees in villages. Not surprising, the artists too are from various such backgrounds including farmers, pottery-makers, candy-makers and their installations materials are but a natural part of their lives. One of the art installations highlights the bonding between different communities.
Suresh Banda, from Nizamabad district, used tools that were used by his grandfather to construct their house to show the bonding. “My grandfather built our house taking help from neighbours though they belong to different communities and used their tools to construct the house. The tools are valuable for us and we have a special attachment with them,” he says.
Installation of house-friendly sparrows which are a rare sight in urban areas points to our detachment from nature.
The installation of B Swathi is a 12-feet artwork on the problems adolescent girls face. It has red threads hanging from a girl’s school uniform and glass pieces scattered all over the place, underscoring the issue of child abuse.
Voyage Memoir: An installation of ‘Suitcase’ by Manoj. Sweat-drenched, sand coated, with dirt and dust, Manoj considers the ‘suitcase’ as his companion forever.
Harish Manda from Suryapet and D Akshay, from Adilabad apart from Mahesh from Kadapa AP, elaborated on art inspirations from their places and had discussions with art critics, visitors, and students from the University of Hyderabad, JNAFAU, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University.
“When we conduct art shows, we will get knowledge and experience about art and culture from other regions, and it is important for budding art students,” says Dr. Prithi Samyukta, Painting HOD, JNAFAU.
