The White House is considering having President Joe Biden travel to Europe in the coming weeks as a show of support for Ukraine and its allies, according to two administration officials.
The trip has not been confirmed and may not happen, depending on the state of Russia’s invasion, the officials cautioned. If it does, one possible stop for Biden would be Brussels, home to NATO and the European Union. The White House has prioritized rallying together European allies to support Kyiv and isolate Moscow amid Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Biden has only made two international trips since taking office, a precaution largely tied to the pandemic that has dominated his first year in office. Both were to Europe last year, and one included a stop to Brussels to reaffirm American support for NATO and the EU, institutions of which former President Donald Trump was loudly critical through his four years in office.
