Carbon monoxide poisoning hospitalizes 11 at Ohio hotel


MARYSVILLE, Ohio – Investigators were on the scene Sunday morning at the Hampton Inn in Marysville working to determine the source of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning that resulted in several people being treated Saturday night at a nearby hospital.Four people have been released from the Memorial Health Hospital in Marysville after breathing in dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide at the Union County hotel that resulted in 11 people in total being hospitalized, hospital spokeswoman Melanie Ziegler said in an email.The hotel parking lot had few cars in it Sunday morning as caution tape was visible in the pool area, where all of those injured had been before they were treated at Memorial Health.Carbon monoxide: What you need to know to stay safeThe hotel’s front doors were locked and a printed sign taped to the door said all reservations had been moved to a neighboring hotel. The hotel’s house music continued to play through speakers over the front entrance, offering a jarring contrast to the chaos that ensued less than 24 hours earlier.The hotel was evacuated Saturday evening after Marysville police received a 911 call about an unconscious young girl, followed by other reports of other unconscious or injured people. Authorities determined there was carbon monoxide in the pool area, but Marysville Fire Chief Jay Riley said Sunday morning that the exact source of the carbon monoxide was still unclear. Any potential sources had been shut off the previous night when the building was cleared of people, Riley said.Carbon monoxide: More tips to make sure your home is safeAmong the patients treated at Memorial Health Hospital were five adults and six children, Ziegler said Sunday morning.Of those 11 patients, seven of them were transported to the hospital by paramedics, while the other four sought treatment at the hospital on their own, Ziegler said.Two patients initially in critical condition have been stabilized and transferred to other care facilities, Ziegler said. Five patients in serious but stable condition have also been transported to other facilities for ongoing care and monitoring.Four patients have been released.Two others were treated at the scene, Marysville Police Chief Tony Brooks said.

Brooks said the first call came into 911 about 5:30 p.m. that a 2-year-old girl had either fallen into the pool or was found in the pool unconscious at the hotel at 16610 Square Dr. More calls to authorities about unconscious people followed, and others reported symptoms such as dizziness and a burning in the throat, Brooks said. The Marysville Fire Department and Marysville Police called for help from multiple departments, and the hotel was evacuated. All the other guests and staff left on their own, officials said, and hotel management made accommodations to have them stay at other hotels.

One other critical patient and two stable patients were taken to OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Brooks said.Riley said Saturday that a Hampton Inn maintenance team was en route from out of state.
