New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party’s Sarabjit Kaur has been elected as the new mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation with 14 votes.

Total 28 votes were polled for mayor election with the presiding officer declaring 14 votes to BJP, 13 to AAP and terming one vote invalid.

After the BJP emerged victorious, Aam Aadmi Party councillors created a ruckus in the assembly hall of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) and questioned the polling process.

The Congress, which had ended up winning eight of the 35 seats, had opted out of the race.

Reacting to BJP’s victory, Gaurav Pandhi, National Coordinator of Congress Digital Communication and Social Media, claimed that the AAP got its one vote cancelled and ensured that BJP gets the seat.

The B-team of the BJP has achieved its objective, he tweeted adding that this is what AAP aims to achieve wherever they contest elections.

The AAP had fielded Anju Katyal for the post of mayor while the BJP had put up Sarabjit Kaur. Both candidates for the mayor’s post are first-timers.

The post was reserved for a woman councillor in the new MC House’s first year.

Earlier on Sunday, newly elected municipal councillor from the Congress, Harpreet Kaur Babla, joined the BJP, days after the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation polls threw up a hung verdict.
