CM-elect Bhagwant Mann to meet governor today to stake claim to form govt

Photo : ANIChandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister-elect Bhagwant Mann will meet Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday to stake claim to form government in the state. Mann was elected as the leader of the AAP legislative party in Punjab on Friday. The comedian-turned-politician will be sworn in as the next CM of Punjab on March 16. This time, the oath-taking ceremony will not be held at Raj Bhawan. Instead, the sworn-in ceremony will take place in Khatkarkalan in Nawanshahr district as a tribute to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Now swearing-in will not be held in ‘Mahals’ but in villages of freedom fighters. We’ll take oath in the village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh on March 16 as a tribute to him.” On Friday, Mann directed AAP MLAs to spend time in their respective constituencies rather staying than in Chandigarh. He appealed to the legislators not to be arrogant and should also respect those who had not voted for the AAP. The Punjab CM-Elect said, “We have to respect even those who didn’t vote for us…All MLAs must work in the areas from where they have been elected, not just stay in Chandigarh.” Mann won the election from the Dhuri assembly constituency in the Sangrur district of the state. The ruling Congress party was restricted to only 18 seats. Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was decimated to three seats, while its ally Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) bagged only one seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win only two assembly constituencies. One seat was won by an independent candidate. Prominent leaders including CM Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, Former CMs Captain Amarinder Singh, and Parkash Singh Badal and SAD president Sukhbir Badal were defeated in the polls.
