Lisa Nowak is a former American NASA astronaut, aerospace engineer, and United States Navy Captain. Nowak worked as a naval flight officer before being chosen in NASA Astronaut Group 16 by NASA in 1996.  She was selected to serve as a mission specialist in robotics for the STS-121 mission Space Shuttle Discovery.  She is most well known for her criminal charges against a U.S. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman which resulted in her dismissal from NASA as well as the Navy.

Lisa Caputo was born on 10th May 1963 in Washington, D.C., United States. Her mother Jane Caputo was a biological specialist and her father Alfredo Caputo was a computer consultant. Lisa had two younger sisters named Marisa and Andrea and grew up with them in Rockville, Maryland.When she was three years old, she got interested in space after watching the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon mission. The National Air and Space Museum and the Space Shuttle program fascinated her as she grew up, particularly the introduction of female astronauts in 1978.Caputo attended  Luxmanor Elementary School and Tilden Middle School. And completed her high school at Charles W. Woodward High School. During her junior year of high school, Lisa expressed to her mother that she want to become an astronaut.Lisa was a very active school girl.  She served as a member of the Société Honoraire de Français as well as a Girl Scout. Nowak was good at field hockey and during her high school years, she finished track and field athletics. Lisa was named Student-Athlete of the Year, presented to the student who excels most in academics and sports, and graduated high school with co-valedictorian in 1981.Lisa received acceptance to Brown University, a private Ivy League university in Rhode Island, and the United States Naval Academy in Maryland, during her senior year of high school. Despite her parents’ desire for her to attend Brown, Caputo believed she would have a better shot at becoming an astronaut at the Naval Academy.

Career

  • In 1985, Lisa Nowak was commissioned into the United States Navy. She served as a Naval Flight Officer in 1987 after completing the Tactical Navigation course at 86 Training Squadron in NAS Pensacola near Florida.
  • Nowak was deployed to NAS Point Mugu, California’s Electronic Warfare Aggressor in Squadron 34, where she operated the ERA-3B & EA-7L aircraft.
  • In 1993, Nowak was chosen for a Restricted Line assignment as an Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer, and she joined the US Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland.
  • After graduation from the Naval Postgraduate School, Lisa Nowak served as a flight systems project coordinator at the Air Combat Environment Test & Evaluation Facility.
  • While she was chosen for the astronaut program, she was sent to the Naval Air Systems Command, where she worked on the purchase of new operations for naval aircraft.
  • Nowak earned nearly 1,500 flight hours in 30 aircraft types throughout her Navy tenure. She entered the NASA Astronaut Corps in Johnson Space Center in August 1996.
  • After certifying as a mission specialist officer in robotics, Nowak was appointed to the future project STS-118. On 4th July 2006, her schedule was modified, and she was sent into space.
  • She controlled the Shuttle’s robotic arm and worked as a mission flight project engineer for four spacewalks, logging nearly 13 days in space.
  • Lisa Nowak received the NASA Space Flight Medal on 5th June 2007. After an investigation in Florida for armed robbery, she was put on a 30-day vacation by NASA from 6th February 2007.
  • She flew to Houston, Texas, and was immediately escorted to Johnson Space Center for psychological examination & a medical examination as soon as she arrived. Her service as a Navy Officer with NASA was suspended by the agency on 7th March 2007.
  • On 20 August 2010, Nowak’s title was downgraded from Captain into Commander, while her service was deemed less than honorable.
