The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case of an attempt to rape against TMC leader Sheikh Sufiyan and around 15 others. Sources said the case was registered on 2nd February. The complainant had approached the investigating agency and recorded her statement. She had said that on 3rd May 2021, Sufiyan and others had come to her house looking for her husband and then assaulted her.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had given anticipatory bail to Sheikh Sufiyan in a murder case relating to BJP worker Debabrata Maity in May 2021.

Last August, the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to probe cases relating to poll violence in West Bengal. Over 50 cases of heinous crimes are being investigated by the federal probe agency.

The West Bengal government, however, has filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court order claiming the CBI was “acting at the behest of the Centre and it did not expect a fair probe”.
