Gangtok: The Eastern Army Commander, Lieutenant General RP Kalita, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, arrived at Sukna, Siliguri on 14 February 2022 on a three-day visit to the Trishakti Corps. The Army Commander was briefed by Lieutenant General Tarun Kumar Aich, AVSM, General Officer Commanding, Trishakti Corps on the prevailing situation and operational preparedness of the formations.

On 15 February 2022, the Army Commander met Ganga Prasad, Governor of Sikkim, and Biswanath Somadder, Chief Justice of Sikkim. Issues related to the current security situation along the borders and various facets of the ongoing civil-military cooperation were discussed in the meeting.

The Army Commander also visited forward areas in Sikkim where he was briefed by senior commanders on the ground about the prevailing situation along the border.

During his interaction with the troops, the Army Commander complimented the soldiers for their professionalism, dedication and commitment for maintaining a round-the-clock vigil in inhospitable terrain and adverse climatic conditions.

Lt Gen RP Kalita, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM took over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command on February 1st. He assumed office after paying homage to the martyrs at Vijay Smarak followed by guard of honour at Garrison Battalion Parade Ground. Prior to this, he was Director-General Manpower Planning & Personnel Services in IHQ of MoD (Army), New Delhi.

The General was commissioned into 9 KUMAON in 1984 and has extensive operational experience in Sri Lanka, Jammu & Kashmir and North-East. He commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion in Kashmir, a Mountain Brigade and an Infantry Division actively committed in Counter Insurgency Operations in Jammu & Kashmir and strategically important Corps in North East.
