New Delhi: The Election Commission of India will announce the schedule for Assembly elections in five states at 3.30 pm on Saturday.

The five states that are set to hold Assembly elections this year are Goa, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

This comes two days after the Election Commission reviewed the COVID situation with the Union Health Secretary and health experts and emphasised the need for vaccination of all eligible people in five poll-bound states.

The poll panel in a separate meeting also discussed the law and order situation in the five states with Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

The EC had carried out a “complete review” of the COVID situation besides discussing with the medical experts about the preventive measures to be ensured during campaigning and polling.

It advised the health secretary to ensure complete vaccination for all eligible persons, news agency PTI reported, citing sources.

In a previous meeting with Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on December 27, the poll panel had asked him to ramp up the vaccination drive in the five states.

Out of the states that will hold elections, the BJP is in power in four states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The Congress is in power in Punjab.

In Uttar Pradesh, 403 Assembly constituencies will vote, while 117 seats will go to polls in Punjab, 70 in Uttarakhand, 60 in Manipur 60 and 40 in Goa.
