From Keshav Prasad Maurya to Krishna Patel – Key candidates in fray

Lucknow: As Uttar Pradesh is set to hold fifth round of the seven-phase Assembly elections on Sunday, the polls will draw up crucial tests for several prominent leaders.This phase will be held across 61 Assembly seats spread across 12 districts of the politically vital state. Friday was the last day of campaigning for the fifth phase.Sultanpur, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Barabanki, Bahraich, Shravasti and Gonda are among the districts where polling will take place on Sunday.Amethi and Raebareli, once considered as Congress strongholds, and Ayodhya, the epicentre of the Ram temple movement, will too vote on Sunday.The electoral fates of 692 candidates will be decided in this phase. Key faces in the fray include Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and Union minister Anupriya Patel.Here are high-stakes battles to watch out for:Keshav Prasad Maurya VS Pallavi PatelDeputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Keshav Prasad Maurya is one of the prominent candidates in this phase. The influential OBC leader is contesting from the Sirathu Assembly seat in Kaushambi district. Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) candidate Pallavi Patel has been pitted against him. Patel is the elder sister of Union minister Anupriya Patel, whose Apna Dal (Sonelal) is an ally of the ruling BJP.BJP’s Sanjaya Sinh VS Congress’ Ashish ShuklaAmethi, a high-profile constituency which was once considered as a bastion of Congress, will see a fight between two turncoats – Congress-turned-BJP leader Sanjay Sinh, BJP-turned-Congress leader Ashish Shukla.Sinh, also known as the ‘Raja of Amethi’, had given up his Rajya Sabha seat and joined BJP in 2019. He is contesting the state polls for the first time in 33 years.The Samajwadi Party has fielded the wife of its former minister Gayatri Prajapati from Amethi seat.Apna Dal (K) chief Krishna Patel Vs Rajendra KumarUnion minister Anupriya Patel’s mother and Apna Dal (K) chief Krishna Patel is contesting from the Pratapgarh seat. Apna Dal (K) has forged an alliance with the Samajwadi Party.Anupriya Patel, who is the head of rival faction of the party named after her father Sonelal Patel, pulled out her party’s candidate at the last minute handed over the seat to the BJP to challenge her mother Krishna Patel. The saffron party has pitted Rajendra Kumar against Krishna.Tej Narayan Pandey VS Ved Prakash GuptaAyodhya, which has been a hotbed for politics around Ram Janmabhoomi since the early 1980s, will witness interesting battle between sitting BJP MLA Ved Prakash Gupta and Samajwadi Party leader and ex-minister Tej Narayan Pandey. This will be the first crucial election since the Supreme Court’s historic verdict on the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid case in 2019.Nand Gopal Gupta VS Alpana NishadBJP stronghold Allahabad South, which falls under Prayagraj district, will see BJP minister Nand Gopal Gupta locking horns with Congress’ Alpana Nishad. The SP has fielded Raees Chandra Shukla from the seat.Dharamraj Singh Yadav VS Ramkumari MauryaAnother key battle in the phase will be between Dharamraj Singh Yadav of Samajwadi Party and Ramkumari Maurya of BJP. Yadav never faced defeat from the Assembly seat in the past. It will be interesting to see if he will be able to retain the seat this year too.
