New Delhi: Harmeet Singh Kalka was on Saturday elected as the president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. The polling process however was overshadowed by chaotic scenes as members of the committee engaged in arguments.

The voting process for the presidential elections had been stopped earlier after an eligible voter revealed his decision publicly. Members of the committee had created a ruckus at the Rakab Ganj Gurdwara as attempts to arrive at a consensus failed repeatedly. According to reports, there were conflicting views on what to do about the vote cast by the member in question.

Debate had also broken out over the eligibility of another member who was yet to prove his proficiency in the Punjabi language. It is incidentally a mandatory requirement for those seeking to become members of the committee.

“Guru Granth Sahib’s sukhasan performed respectfully as ‘sangat’ was perturbed too. It was already very late. We received calls, messages and videos. Deeming it my responsibility, I requested everyone, I thank them for accepting my request,” said DSGMC Acting President Kulwant Singh Bath.

“The Director and his team that was responsible to conduct this election will answer. I can’t reply on the same,” Bath had said earlier upon being asked whether the presidential election will be conducted.

The autonomous group manages gurdwaras in the national capital as well as several educational institutions, hospitals, old age homes and more.
