India-China crisis: Want peaceful resolution of dispute, says US as senators back Delhi against Beijing’s aggression

New Delhi: The United States has said that when it comes to the broader issue of the India-China border situation, it supports direct dialogue and a peaceful resolution of the border disputes.

We have previously voiced our concerns on Beijing’s pattern of ongoing attempts to intimidate its neighbours, said US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price adding that Washington stands with friends, partners and allies, to advance shared prosperity, security and values in the Indo-Pacific.

On being asked if ongoing tensions between US and Russia over Ukraine have impacted US-India ties, Price said that the relationship with India stands on its own merits.

When asked how the US sees India’s stance in UN Security Council on the issue of Ukraine, Price said that he will leave it to Indian partners to discuss their stance in the UN Security – in the UN on this particular issue.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine would have implications for the security environment well beyond that neighbourhood whether it is the PRC, India or countries around the world, Price said.

Meanwhile, the United States asserted that it stands with India against Chinese aggression as several lawmakers slammed China for choosing a PLA soldier, who was part of the military command that attacked Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley in 2020, as a torchbearer for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Earlier in the day, two top American senators slammed China for its decision to field Qi Fabao, the regimental commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), who was injured during the June 2020 border skirmish with Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh, as the torchbearer for the Games Torch Relay.

“Another outrageous example of the #CCP’s flagrant politicization of Beijing2022. Their decision to choose a soldier who participated in a 2020 ambush against Indian troops as a torchbearer is appalling and deliberately provocative,” Senator Marco Rubio said.

In another tweet, Senator Jim Risch, a Ranking Member of the powerful US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also said the US will continue to support the sovereignty of India.
