Lockdown-like COVID curbs in Kerala today – What’s allowed, what’s not

Thiruvananthapuram: The second one-day lockdown in Kerala began on Sunday, a day after the state reported over 50,000 new infections and eight COVID-19-related deaths.

Earlier this month, the state government decided to impose lockdown-like curbs in the state on the two Sundays – January 23 and 30, to contain the rapid spread of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kerala reported 50,812 new infections and eight COVID-19-related deaths on Saturday, pushing the infection count to 59,31,945 and the death toll to 53,191.

According to the health department, 47,649 persons recuperated from the disease, pushing the number of total cured to 55,41,834.

What’s allowed, what’s not

Shops selling essential items such as milk, newspaper, fish, meat, fruits and vegetables and provisions are allowed to function from 7 am to 9 pm.

Chemist shops are also allowed to open.

Most of the private vehicles are not allowed to ply. Those traveling for emergency purposes can travel after producing necessary documents proving the nature of emergency to the police.

Those who are traveling to airports or already booked tourist destinations can travel after showing necessary documents including tickets to the police officers who are engaged in vehicle checking across the state.

Only parcel services are allowed at hotels and medical stores, media houses and telecom-Internet services are allowed to function despite curbs.
