Maharashtra, Delhi reporting decrease in Covid cases; Kerala, Tamil Nadu witnessing upward trend: Health Ministry

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday informed that Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala have over 3 lakh active COVID-19 cases each. Addressing the press, the Centre said that 11 states currently have over 50,000 active coronavirus infections.

In a positive trend and big relief for the people, the health ministry said that Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Odisha, Haryana, West Bengal are registering a decrease in Covid infections and also the positivity rate is showing a downward trend in the respective states. However, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan are recording high number of coronavirus cases, the Centre further informed.

Addressing the media, Luv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry, said that 400 districts across the country reported over 10 per cent weekly Covid positivity rate, while 141 districts logged 5 to 10 per cent positivity in week ending January 26.

Urging the eligible people to get vaccinated against the deadly contagious virus, the government said that on May 7, 2021, during the peak of the second wave of COVID, there were 4,14,188 new cases and 3,679 deaths. At that point in time, only 3 per cent were fully vaccinated. However, on January 21, 2022, there were 3,47,254 new coronavirus cases and 435 deaths.
