New Delhi: Government-owned pharma major Bharat biotech, on Tuesday appealed to health workers to ensure that only Covaxin is administered to individuals in the 15-18 age group. In response to reports that unapproved COVID-19 vaccines were being administered to the teenage population in the country, Bharat Biotech urged healthcare workers to remain highly vigilant.

“We have received several additional reports of individuals in the 15-18 year age group being administered unapproved COVID-19 vaccines. We humbly request healthcare workers to be highly vigilant and ensure that only Covaxin is administered to individuals in the 15-18 years age group.

In a statement, Bharat Biotech said that the approvals for Covaxin were received after a thorough clinical trial evaluation for safety and immunogenicity in the 2-18 years age group and added that Covaxin is the only COVID-19 vaccine in India that has been approved for children.

50 per cent in the 15-18 age group vaccinated: Mandaviya

Since the vaccination for the 15-18 age group began on January 3, the country has inoculated over 3.71 crore teens so far. Union Health Minister Mansukah Mandaviya, on Tuesday, said that over 50 per cent of youngsters between 15-18 age group have received their 1st dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The government is also looking at vaccinating children between 12-14 years of age from February end.

 “Amazing enthusiasm among Young India for COVID-19 vaccination. Over 3.5 crore children between the 15-18 Age group have received 1st dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, since 3rd January. Congratulations to all my young friends who have got vaccinated.” Mandaviya said in a tweet on Monday.
