New BJP governments in UP, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur to be sworn in after Holi; central observers appointed

Photo : PTIPanaji/New Delhi: The governments in four of the five states, where the Bharatiya Janata Party won in the recent Assembly Elections, will be sworn in after Holi which falls on March 18 (Friday). Goa BJP president Sadanand Shet Tanavade Monday said, “Swearing-in ceremony of the new government in Goa would be conducted post-Holi celebrations along with the other three states where BJP has won a majority.” Tanavade, however, refused to confirm any specific date for the swearing-in ceremony. The remarks came as the BJP’s parliamentary board today announced the appointment of central observers and co-observers for the election of the leader of the legislative parties in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa. It is in these four states that the BJP won majority or secured enough numbers to form the government. In Punjab, the fifth state where elections were held in February and March, the Aam Aadmi Party emerged victorious. While Home Minister and senior party leader Amit Shah will oversee the election of the leader of the legislative party in UP as a central observer, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be the central observer in Uttarakhand. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will take the charge of Manipur and Goa, respectively.Related NewsElection results in 5 states – Check parties’ poll performance in numbersGoa Election 2022: CM Pramod Sawant holds meeting with 20 losing BJP candidates In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP returned to power with 255 seats while the alliance led by it won a total of 273 seats out of the total 403. In Uttarakhand, the party secured a majority by winning 47 seats out of the total 70. The BJP also secured majority by winning 32 of the total 60 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. In Goa, the BJP won 20 seats out of the total 40 and managed to secure the support of Independents. However, despite securing the numbers to form the government, the party is yet to stake a claim to form the next government in Goa. It will be the third successive time that the BJP will form the government in the coastal state. The delay could be due to the reported differences within the party unit over the leadership issue. The party has, however, denied any differences.
