New Delhi: At least 12 people died and 16 were injured in a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on Saturday. Also, As many as 10 ministers and 20 MLAs in Maharashtra tested positive for coronavirus, Dy CM Ajit Pawar confirmed. Below are the day’s biggest headlines. 

Vaishno Devi stampede: 12 dead, 16 injured in Katra; Home Minister Amit Shah assures support to state

Yatra at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine resumed Saturday afternoon after 12 people were killed and 14 injured in a stampede at the shrine in the early hours of Saturday. The stampede occurred when a large number of devotees entered the Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan without permission slips to offer obeisance on the New Year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sanctioned Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those killed in the stampede while the Lt. Governor sanctioned Rs 10 lakh each for survivors of those killed and Rs 2 lakh each for the injured. Read More

Maharashtra: 10 ministers, over 20 MLAs test Covid positive; govt mulls imposing more restrictions

As many as 10 ministers and 20 MLAs have tested positive for coronavirus in Maharashtra, confirmed Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday. This comes amid the state witnessing a sharp spike in daily infections. Queried on the possibility of imposition of more curbs, Pawar said the state government is keeping a tab on the increasing number of patients. “If the number of patients continues to rise then there will be strict restrictions. To avoid strict restrictions everybody should follow norms,” he said. Read More

Tibet issue must be resolved and Dalai Lama should get justice: Ramdas Athawale

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Saturday said that the Tibet issue must be resolved.

Dalai Lama came to India in 1949 and he should get justice, Athawale said adding that Tibet people should not suffer.

He also reacted to the letter from the Chinese Embassy in Delhi to Indian MPs expressing “concern” for attending a dinner reception hosted by the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile saying External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will reply to it. Read More

GST revenue collection in December 2021 declines marginally to Rs 1.29 lakh crore
