Coronavirus cases in India rose from 10,000 to over 1 lakh in just 8 days

In a massive surge, the daily COVID-19 infections in India surged to one lakh from 10,000 cases in just eight days during the third wave of the pandemic. As a comparison, COVID-19 cases reached one lakh from 10,000 in 47 days during the second wave a year ago. During the first COVID-19 wave in 2020, the SARS-CoV-2 virus took 103 days from 10,000 coronavirus cases to reach one lakh cases (the peak recorded was 98,795). Last year, the second wave peaked at about 4 lakh cases. It is clear from the current tally just how quickly the Omicron-led wave is spreading in the community. India’s new COVID travel restrictions: Complete checklist for international passengers, list of at-risk countries

India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) notified a new set of guidelines for inbound international travellers. From January 11, all international travellers will be required to undergo home quarantine even if tested negative at the airport. Those who test positive will be sent straight to an isolation facility, where their health will be monitored as per set protocols. Read More

PM security breach in Punjab: 3-member MHA probe committee issues summons to Punjab Police chief, dozen other officials

In connection with the massive lapse in the security cover of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Punjab on January 5, the Supreme Court of India directed the Registrar General of Punjab and Haryana High Court to secure and preserve all records of travel, and also directed the state and central committees to refrain from conducting inquiries till Monday (January 10) when it hear the matter again. Punjab govt submits report to Centre, claims it had no prior info on change in PM Modi’s route

Two days after the security breach that halted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy for almost 20 minutes on a flyover in Ferozepur, the Punjab government has submitted a written report to the Centre over the incident. In the report, the Punjab government said that a committee has been constituted to probe the matter and an FIR has been lodged in the case. The Punjab government also reiterated that it had no prior information about the change of route by the Prime Minister’s convoy.  Read More

India’s electronic import tariffs highest in comparison to peer countries

A study by Indian Cellular and Electronics Association revealed that, India’s import tariffs in the Electronics sector is higher than China, Vietnam, Thailand and Mexico. A key finding in the study highlighted that while India has zero tariffs on 32 of the 120 tariff lines, other countries have more zero tariffs. India’s tariffs are 85% higher than Thailand and Vietnam and 95% higher than China. The report also highlighted that tariffs in 2020 are higher than in 2014. The study showed that higher tariffs negate the support provided through PLI Schemes. Read More

The third wave of COVID-19 is once again threatening the BCCI’s plans to stage IPL 2022 and the apex board is looking for ways to conduct the league in India. As per a report, the BCCI currently has two routes in front of it. The initial plan is to have all 10 teams playing the home-away format, with the home games being held at their respective stadiums. Shahid Kapoor is all set to move into his new home. The actor opened up about it on Friday and shared that if “all goes well” he might move into his swanky apartment this year.
