Omicron grips Kerala as tally mounts to 528; state records 17,755 new Covid-19 cases, 106 deaths in past 24 hours

Thiruvananthapuram: The third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, driven by the Omicron variant, is spreading like wildfire across the country, especially in Kerala, with the southern state on Saturday reporting 48 more cases of the highly-contagious mutant strain.

This takes Kerala’s overall Omicron infections to 528, as per the state health department bulletin.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that of the 48 cases, 33 are from low-risk countries while two were from high-risk nations.

Nine people contracted the mutant variant from their contacts, while four are from other states.

Of those found infected with Omircon on Saturday, 12 are in Kozhikode district, 9 in Ernakulam, 7 in Thrissur, 6 in Thiruvananthapuram, 4 in Kottayam and 2 in Malappuram.

Kollam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Palakkad and Wayanad districts have one case each.

Of the 528 people who have contracted Omicron, 365 are from low-risk countries while 92 are from high-risk nations.

So far, 61 people have contracted the infection from their close contacts, while 10 are from other states.

Meanwhile, Kerala continued to see an uptick in its daily Covid-19 cases, recording 17,755 new infections today, taking the overall tally to 53,51,583.

As per the health bulletin, 106 more people succumbed to the deadly infections, taking the total death toll to 50,674.

“Currently, there are 90,649 active Covid-19 cases in the state, out of which only four per cent of patients are hospitalised,” the release said.

Kerala had reported 16,338 fresh infections on Friday.
