New Delhi: The precaution dose or third shot of COVID-19 vaccine will be of the same vaccine a person has taken — be it Covishield or Covaxin and will not be a mix-and-match, the Centre said on Wednesday.

“Precautionary COVID-19 vaccine dose will be the same vaccine as has been given previously. Those who have received Covaxin will receive Covaxin, those who have received primary two doses of Covishield will receive Covishield,” said Dr VK Paul, Member-Health, NITI Aayog during a press briefing.

The “precaution dose” for healthcare and frontline workers would be administered from January 10. The elderly population aged 60 years and above having comorbidities will also be given precaution dose on the advice of their doctor from January 10 as well.

According to Union Health Ministry guidelines, the prioritisation and sequencing of the precaution dose would be based on the completion of nine months (39 weeks) from the date of administration of the second dose.
