Protest after candidate from JD (U) gets shot

Imphal: Pre-poll violence in Manipur has intensified after a candidate from the Janata Dal-United JD (U) has been shot on the night of February 26. The candidate W Rojit aka Bullet was shot under the shoulder and is now hospitalised at a private nursing home in Imphal. Rojit is contesting from the 4-Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency in Imphal. The person was shot by alleged unidentified miscreants who are yet to be traced by the Manipur police.Following the incident, protests were observed in the Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency in Imphal. Women and children came out in huge numbers condemning the incident. Children were found holding placards of ‘Long Live W Rojit’.The State President of JDU Hangkhanpao has alleged gross irregularities among the security personnel in terms of providing protection to the candidate. “God was with us and JDU will continue,” said Hangkhanpao. Meanwhile, the National Election Observer of the JDU Aneel Hedge has stated that democracy is in danger in Manipur.The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken nod to the matter. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajesh Agarwal told Times Now that all pre-poll violence-related matters have been looked into along with the incident involving Rojit, security personnel deployment has been completed with a special emphasis on critical polling stations and districts. The CEO has acknowledged that the challenge is high in the Churachandpur and Kangpokpi.However, this is not a single incident of pre-poll violence in Imphal. In another pre-poll violence in Manipur, the father of a National People’s Party (NPP) candidate was injured after being shot at by unidentified miscreants on Friday night of February 18 during a campaign at Yaripok Yambeem Leikai area in Imphal East district. The victim, Shamjai Singh, father of NPP candidate from Andro constituency, L Sanjoy Singh received a bullet injury on his right shoulder.As per data by the CEO office, over 60 FIRs have been lodged in the last 40 days. linked with pre-poll violence. In the phase 1 elections in Manipur, 303 polling stations (PS) have been identified as critical and 546 have identified as vulnerable. Manipur is set to go for the first phase of elections on February 28.
