New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that there should be no controversy around hijab row.

Quran Sharif is focused on education, not hijab, he said adding that it is important to understand what is more important – education or hijab. The CM further said that Muslim’s biggest responsibility is education.

This statement from the Assam CM comes amid a row over hijab in Karnataka.

Earlier today, BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur said headscarves will not be tolerated if they are worn in educational institutions other than madrassas.

The Bhopal MP also said that Hindus worship women and don’t see them in an evil manner.

Thakur gave this statement while speaking at a function in a temple in the Barkheda Pathani area here.

“You have madrassas. We have nothing to do if you wear hijab or apply khijab (hair colour) there (in madrassas). You wear the attire required there and follow their discipline. But if you distort the knowledge and discipline of schools and colleges in the country and start wearing hijab and applying khijab then it will not be tolerated,” she said.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has told the state legislative assembly that his government will abide by the High Court’s interim order on the Hijab row.

The Chief Minister was replying to Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah, who sought clarification from him during the zero hour, on the Higher Education Minister C N Ashwath Narayan’s statement yesterday that dress code is applicable to Pre University colleges and not for Degree Colleges.

As protests for and against the hijab intensified in different parts of Karnataka and turned violent in some places following which the state government declared a holiday for all high schools and colleges in the state for three days, from February 9, and it was subsequently extended up to February 16 for colleges.
