Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, on Wednesday, hit out at the Congress party for violating the flag code by displaying the national flag in the Well of the Karnataka Assembly. Slamming Congress for ‘failing’ to act as a responsible opposition party, Bommai said that the Congress is selectively quoting certain statements made by Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa.

The ruckus began after Congress leaders rushed to the Well of the House demanding resignation of Eshwarappa claiming that he said that ‘we will hoist a saffron flag at Red Fort’. Visuals from the House showed Congress leaders protesting in the Well holding the National Flag.

“Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa recently said: We will hoist a saffron flag at Red Fort. The chief minister should sack him from the Cabinet. He has no right to continue as minister after this statement,” Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah said in the House.

Eshwarappa has issued a clarification, won’t take action against him: Bommai

Bommai hit out at the Congress party for ‘selectively quoting’ Eshwarappa. “They are selectively quoting only a part of his statement and are misleading the people in the state and the Assembly. Legally, Eshwarappa has not committed any mistake and no action can be taken against him,” he said.

Bommai further added that his colleague Eshwarappa has already issued a clarification over his statement. He added that the Minister did not say that a saffron flag will be hoisted at the Red fort immediately ‘but in another 300 or 500 years’. “He said it may or may not happen. He also added that we have accepted the national flag and no one must disrespect it,” Bommai added.
