Hyderabad: After a break of over three weeks, educational institutions in the State have reopened for in-person classes on Tuesday, albeit with thin attendance. While the majority of the schools have reopened for the in-person classes, students turned up in low numbers.
According to the attendance report released by the School Education department, 32.47 per cent of the total 55,11,602 students in 37,590 schools in the State had attended the physical classes on Tuesday.
Among the managements, 34.01 per cent attendance out of the total 24,05,047 students was recorded in 26,802 government schools. Likewise, out of 30,25,174 students in 10,197 private schools, 31.40 per cent attended the physical classes. Similarly, 26.78 per cent attendance was registered in 591 private aided schools which have an enrolment of 81,381 students.

The managements of the educational institutions have attributed students’ poor turnout to Tuesday being Amavasya, which is considered an inauspicious day by many.
“The primary and upper primary classes had 20 per cent attendance and close to 50 per cent students attended in the Class X. One of the main reasons for low turnout today was it being Amavasya,” Telangana Recognised School Managements Association president, Yadagiri Shekhar Rao said.
The schools which were not reopened on Tuesday would commence for in-person classes from Wednesday, he said.
Not just day schools, residential schools and junior colleges under various managements too reported low attendance. The universities in the State have also commenced the physical classes.
3-day isolation
Meanwhile, the educational institutions particularly the ones offering residential education are making elaborate safety measures including three-day isolation and staggered timings for dining to contain the spread of Covid-19.
“Students must undergo three-day isolation in the school premises. To avoid crowding during dining, we have instructed the schools to follow staggered timings,” said a senior official of BC welfare residential schools.
