Hyderabad: There were internal disparities among Muslims in the attainment of higher education based on income level, gender, and medium of education, and institutions such as MANUU must give preference to such groups through scholarships, differential fee structure, hostel facility, and remedial coaching classes, said Sukhdeo Thorat, Emeritus Professor, JNU, Centre for the Study of Regional Development, here on Sunday.
Delivering an online lecture on the topic ‘Where do the Muslim lag behind in higher education?: Lessons for policies’ organised by the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) on its 25th Foundation Day, Prof Thorat reiterated the fact that Muslims had the lowest Gross Enrolment Ratio (16.6 per cent) in higher education among all the communities in the country (national average is 26.3 per cent).
Research shows that Muslims students who were from Hindi or Urdu medium have less probability of going into higher education than those from English medium, he said and suggested institutions such as the MANUU provide English language support to students from economically weaker sections.
