New Delhi: Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi on Monday wrote to Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj, expressing condolences on the demise of his industrialist father Rahul Bajaj.

In her message, the Congress president said industrialist Rahul Bajaj added a unique luster to the world of Indian industry.  “The name Bajaj stood for quality that one could trust, for fairness and honesty. At this time of grief, my thoughts are with you and family,” she said.

The last rites of former Bajaj Group chairman, Rahul Bajaj, were performed in Pune on Sunday with full state honours in the presence of representatives of India Inc, politicians, and workers of Bajaj group who bid a final adieu to the veteran industrialist.

Bajaj passed away in a private hospital in Pune on Saturday due to illness. He was 83.

Lauding Rahul Bajaj’s contribution to the Indian industry, Gandhi said he served as a moral compass for the world of Indian industry, with his efforts for social justice and equality, his empathy for the more vulnerable in our society, his deep patriotism, and his unshakeable personal and professional integrity.

“No wonder he was so widely admired and loved. He carried forward the noble tradition established by Jamnalal ji. I am sure Rahul Bajaj ji must have taken great pride in your own achievements, confident that you would take forward his work with the same dedication and standards of excellence,” she added.

Bajaj, popularly known as ‘The Scooter King’, was the recipient of many awards, including the Padma Bhushan from the government of India. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2010.
