New Delhi: As the hijab-row triggered protests across Karnataka, Union Minister and senior BJP Giriraj Singh on Tuesday slammed those supporting the Muslim girl students’ right to wear and wondered if anybody will tolerate if Hindus say they will offer ‘havan’ in education institutions.

While speaking to reporters, the BJP Lok Sabha MP alleged that people believing in the concept of ‘ghazwa-e-Hind’ (Islamic conquest of India) are fuelling protests in Karnataka for Muslim girls’ right to wear the hijab.

“Are they working for an Islamic state,” Singh said.

The BJP leader hit out at Congress and alleged that the grand old party’s appeasement politics over the years have resulted in such a situation.

Singh tried to corner Congress over former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s lines that minorities have the first rights over the country’s resources.

“We never said any Hindu has the first right. We said the poor have the first right be it Hindus or Muslims,” Giriraj Singh.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh claimed that SDPI-backed CFI (Campus Front of India) is behind the hijab controversy.

As the protests over wearing hijab spread across the state, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai ordered the closure of schools and colleges in the state for the next three days.

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Udupi witnessed huge protests after a large group of students wearing saffron stoles and headgears raised slogans as hijab-clad Muslim girls were staging a protest.

The Karnataka High Court today appealed to students and people to maintain peace and posted the matter for February 9, 2022.

“This Court requests the students and the public to maintain peace and tranquility. This Court has full faith in the wisdom and virtue of public at large and hopes that the same would be put to practice,” Justice Krishna S Dixit said.
