Meerut: A video of Samajwadi Party’s Muslim candidate Aadil Chaudhary has gone viral in which he was heard saying that his party is going to form government in the state after the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls and that they will take “revenge on those who are oppressing us”.

“Out government is coming to power in the state, Inshallah we will not leave them. The way we are being persecuted by them, we will take revenge so that they would think 100 times before exploiting us,” he was heard telling a group of party members in the video, in an apparent reference to the BJP government.

Chaudhary has been fielded by the Samajwadi Party from the Meerut South seat for the next month’s Assembly elections.

The SP candidate later said that not he but the voters will take revenge on the BJP and that his statement was being misconstrued.

Taking note of the video, Meerut Police said that they are examining the video and assured appropriate action.

Meerut Superintendent of Police Vineet Bhatnagar said that if SP candidate’s statement is found to be violating poll norms, action will be taken against him.

The Samajwadi Party on Monday released its first list of 159 candidates for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav will contest the polls from Karhal in Mainpuri district while his uncle and and Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) president Shivpal Singh Yadav has been fielded from Jaswantnagar.

Jailed SP leader Azam Khan, who recently moved the Supreme Court seeking interim bail to campaign in the next month’s elections, has been nominated from Rampur seat. He has been lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur jail since February 2020 for a number of cases registered against him.

Uttar Pradesh will go to polls in seven phases on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, March 3 and 7 and the counting of votes will be done on March 10.
