Guwahati: As COVID-19 cases decline, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the state was now lifting all pandemic-induced restrictions. There will also be no curfew in the northeastern state from February 15. Wearing masks however remains mandatory in all places.

“There will be no curfew in Assam from February 15th and all COVID-19 restrictions are hereby withdrawn,” Sarma said. Public spaces such as malls and cinema halls will now remain open at full capacity. While weddings can now be held through the night, guests must be fully vaccinated with two doses.

With many students around the state prepping for their school board exams, Sarma also urged eligible individuals to get vaccinated. The Centre had expanded the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive last month to include all children above the age of 15. Students appearing for the board examinations must get both doses of vaccination, the Chief Minister reiterated.

Local body elections will also be held in the coming months. “Along with other Municipal Board elections in the state, Guwahati Municipal Corporation and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council elections will be held in April,” said Chief Minister Sarma.

Assam on Sunday registered a steady decline in COVID-19 cases for the sixth consecutive day, with 256 fresh infections being reported. The 256 new cases were detected from 10,691 sample tests done during the day, with the day’s positivity rate being 2.39%. The state had logged 446 fresh cases on Saturday from 21,152 sample tests. The number of active cases in the state presently stands at 8,354.
