Chandigarh: Counting of votes is underway for the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation election, and results are expected by Monday afternoon, officials said.

They added that nine counting centres have been set up for 35 wards of the municipal corporation. Counting began at 9 am.

There was a turnout of more than 60 per cent at the polls that took place on Friday.

Currently, there are 35 wards, up from 26 in 2016.

It has been a tradition in the past for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  and the Congress to lock horns in municipal elections, but with the Aam Aadmi Party entering the fray, the contest was triangular this time.

In the current municipal body, the BJP is the majority party.

Chandigarh election result

The BJP won 20 seats and its erstwhile ally Shiromani Akali Dal won one in the last MC elections. Congress managed to win only four seats.

BJP’s campaign was built around its ‘achievements’ over the last five years.

On the other hand, Congress and AAP attacked the BJP for allegedly failing to carry out development projects and criticised it for the decline of the city in ‘Swachh Survekshan’ (a ranking for cleanliness).

The two parties also slammed the BJP for not resolving the dumping ground issue of Dadumajra as well as the rise in commodities prices.
