Chopper was en route to casualty evacuation when it crashed in north Kashmir: Army

Cheetah helicopter (Representational Image)Srinagar: The Cheetah helicopter, which crashed yesterday in north Kashmir, was en route to casualty evacuation, said Army officials on Saturday.In the crash, a Major-ranked co-pilot was killed while the main pilot is fighting for his life in an Army hospital in Udhampur.In an official statement, Army officials said that Lieutenant Colonel Vivek Kumar Dwivedi, 44, was injured in the Cheetah helicopter crash which took place yesterday in Gurez sector, Jammu and Kashmir.The officer had flown there along with Major Sankalp who lost his life in the accident, for casualty evacuation, they said.The officials went on to add that after the chopper went down, the pilot and the co-pilot were rescued in an ALH helicopter and brought to the base hospital in Srinagar.The two pilots were evacuated but Major Yadav was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.Lt Col Dwivedi is now being shifted to Command Hospital in Udhampur for further treatment, they added.Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi condoled the demise of Major Yadav.”I salute the courage and supreme sacrifice of our braveheart Army officer Maj Sankalp Yadav who laid down his life in the line of duty in Gurez sector. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.
