Congress after 4-hour CWC meeting

Photo : PTINew Delhi: Sonia Gandhi will continue as the president of the Congress, the party said after a marathon meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) this evening, which was called to discuss the party’s abysmal performance in the recently held Assembly polls in five states.”Congress party will be fully prepared to face the electoral challenges in the forthcoming elections including the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. CWC unanimously reaffirmed its faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and requested her to lead from the front,” party’s general secretary KC Venugopal said in a statement.Venugopal also said that Congress will hold ‘Chintan Shivir’ immediately after Budget Session of Parliament and the CWC will meet again before that. The senior party leader also said that Gandhi will immediately take up corrective measures to “revamp and re-strengthen” the organisation.During the crucial meet, the Congress president listened to all leaders and said she is willing to make required changes to strengthen party, sources said.

We all have faith in her leadership,” Kharge was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.Meanwhile, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said that every single member of CWC wants Sonia Gandhi to guide party till organisational elections are held. He also said that every Congress worker wants Rahul Gandhi to lead the party, adding that organisational polls are on and the next president will be decided through that. Another Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao said that a detailed discussion was held over the party’s defeat in the state polls and the party leaders discussed how to take things forward. “She (Sonia Gandhi) continues to be the president of the party. A detailed discussion was held about the five state elections. We discussed how to take things forward and how we prepare for the forthcoming elections,” Rao, who is Congress Goa in-charge said after the crucial meeting.During the meeting, the CWC discussed what went wrong in the state polls while senior leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad and Digvijay Singh gave suggestions.In the recently-held Assembly elections, the Congress could not prevent BJP from retaining power in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa. The party also lost Punjab to Aam Aadmi Party.
