New Delhi: A day after being suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the Winter Session, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien took to Twitter with a reference to Hitler and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The MP had been suspended from the upper house of Parliament for ‘unruly behaviour’ a day before the Session came to an end.

Allegedly, he had thrown the Rajya Sabha Rule Book towards the Chair amid discussion on Election Laws (Amendment Bill) 2021. The TMC MP had however countered the allegations, contending that he had been suspended while protesting against the BJP as it “made a mockery of Parliament and bulldozed” the Election Bill.

“Hitler burned down Parliament. PM Modi is slow poisoning Parliament,” he tweeted, sharing an earlier video.

Earlier on Wednesday, the TMC floor leader had accused the BJP-led Central government of “mocking at and dismantling democracy” and “slow-poisoning Parliament”. Having been suspended from Parliament, he had joined the dharna of the 12 suspended opposition MPs at the Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex today. These MPs (which include TMC leaders) had been suspended on the first day of the Winter Session on account of ‘unruly and violent behaviour’ displayed during the Monsoon Session in August.

Hitting out at the government over the newly passed Bill that proposes the linking of electoral roll data with Aadhaar, O’Brien contended that it would expose the mobile phone numbers of voters, which in turn would make it easy to undertake social media profiling. On Tuesday, the Parliament had passed the bill in Rajya Sabha in a voice vote, amid a walkout by the opposition. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
