Panaji: As a result of a rise in COVID-19 cases in Goa, the state’s government on Monday decided to close schools and colleges until January 26. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who chaired the Task Force meeting on COVID-19 on Monday, told the media that night curfew will also be implemented in Goa.

The COVID-19 positivity rate in Goa on Sunday was 10.7 per cent.

“It has been decided to close the physical sessions for classes 8 and 9 in schools from tomorrow till January 26,” Shekhar Salkar, a member of the Task Force, told reporters in Panaji.

Meanwhile, Salkar also said offline classes would not be held in schools or colleges, but eligible students will be vaccinated on school premises over the next few days and will not be required to return until January 26.

“Once they are vaccinated, they need not attend the classes till January 26,” Salkar said.

He added that colleges in the coastal state would also be closed until January 26.

In addition, the official stated that the order imposing a night curfew between 11 pm and 6 am every day will be issued by the state administration on Monday or Tuesday.

Since the weekly COVID-19 positivity is around five per cent in the state, the state has implemented the restrictions, he said.

The state government will restrict indoor activities as well, he said.

The official also pointed out that even though the state had a high number of COVID-19 cases, there were a few deaths and hospitalisations.

“The task force will meet again to review the situation a couple of days before January 26, to take a decision on the future course of action.”

According to official data, Goa reported 388 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total infection count to 1,81,570. One death pushed the count to 3,523.
